I have a little practice I like to do on the last day of the month. It doesn’t take long, but it's so powerful!
This End-of-the-Month Ritual is crucial for my success in the next month. Not only does it give me closure on the current month, but also gives me the space to dream and get excited about next month!
How the End-of-the-Month Ritual works:
I take a look at 3 different aspects of my business. Each is just as important as the other and should not be skipped!
1. FINANCIALS
I usually do this first so I have even more to celebrate in step 2!
This involves:
reconciling my accounts (if they aren’t already - I usually try to do this weekly) and making sure all income and expenses are accounted for,
running my Profit/Loss report for the month and saving it to a folder on my computer,
setting aside money for taxes (I move it into a dedicated savings account) & making quarterly estimated tax payments if it’s the end of a quarter, and
paying myself (I move it into my personal checking account, as if I was an employee).
This usually only takes an hour or so - maybe two hours if I haven’t kept up on my weekly financial dates.
2. CELEBRATIONS
The end of the month is the perfect time to reflect & celebrate everything that happened that month. I look at both business and life when doing this step.
I like to ask myself:
What did I do this past month that I am proud of?
Did I meet my goals? I actually pull out my goals and write out the progress I’ve made on them.
Did I form new healthy habits?
How am I going to celebrate all that awesomeness? Celebration is key!
Then I put the celebration plan on my calendar for sometime in the next few days (usually later that day).
3. GOALS
Lastly, I set my goals for the next month.
I ask myself:
What do I want to accomplish in the new month? Am I working on new goals or continuing to make progress on older goals?
What are the things that will help me move forward in biz and life?
Are there any new habits I want to work on?
Then I get these goals written out with action steps to go with them. And, if appropriate, I add them to my project manager (I love Asana) and calendar.
And that’s it!
Do you have any rituals to end the month?
